What does it mean to be a "competent" lawyer in today's world of continual technological innovation? How much must a lawyer understand the technology they use to practice? Are there ethical concerns or pitfalls to using remote communication technologies such as Zoom or WebEx? This timely presentation will answer these questions (and many more) by examining the soon-to-be-approved comment on technology competence in connection with Rule 1.1 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, analyzing several recent ethics opinions on technology-related issues including, blogging, data breaches, and cybersecurity as well as taking a practical look at the bigger picture of lawyers and technology in a very rapidly changing legal market.
